Enrichment
We recognise the importance of enrichment for our children; it provides them with a rounded, culturally rich education. Rainbow Citizens are given opportunities to try new and varied activities that enhance their learning, developing character, resilience and motivation, encouraging them to pursue wider goals. We teach life skills that benefit children beyond the classroom, developing an appreciation for cultural and community issues, teamwork and social responsibility.
This is embedded in a variety of different ways.
- We run residential throughout the school so that all children from Years 2 – 6 have the opportunity to experience them.
- We have a wide range of School trips that take place across the year. These can be to museums, art galleries, curriculum linked trips and theatre trips amongst many more.
- We provide children with a variety of opportunities to take part in After-School Clubs. For an overview of our Autumn term clubs, please click here.
- Awareness Days are celebrated to raise the profile of a diverse range of events throughout the school year (e.g Anti-Bullying Week, Neuro-Diversity Week, Mental Health Awareness Day).
- We take part in Celebration Days such as World Book Day and Maths Party Day to enhance our children’s learning further. To see how we celebrated World Book Day this year, please click here.
- We participate in different Sporting tournaments, both in school and with pupils from other schools, providing out children to develop their skills and talents.
- We hold Messy Mornings for our families to come into school and engage in activities together. We have previously run Messy Reading, Messy Maths and Messy Science mornings.
- In addition, we host Family Games and Bingo nights in which families can come together and play together.
- We have Expert PE and Music Teachers who deliver sessions across school, providing children with further high quality learning experiences.
- We also hold an Apprenticeship Week in which we provide our children with the opportunities to take on Apprenticeship roles in school such as Chef, LSA or Office Staff. For more information, please click here.
- Each class supports our local community. This might be through Litter Picking, developing links with local parks or even visiting the local Elderly Home.
- Each class has a class charity that they are responsible for supporting across the year. Classes look at ways in which they can raise money for these charities in imaginative and supportive ways.
- Children are able to make use of our Forest School area in specific sessions, Lunch-time clubs or After School Clubs to help develop character, resilience and build strong social skills. For further information about our Forest School, please click here.
- Each year, representative pupils visit Parliament and are given the opportunity to speak with MPs and watch debating first hand. To see some of our most recent trip to Parliament, please click here.
- Our Year 5 children take part in Bikeability sessions each year to ensure that they are confident on the road when cycling.
- Our children benefit from sessions led by the NSPCC and Bully Busters on a yearly basis, with workshops for Year 5 and Year 6 included.
-
In addition, we support our parents/carers to understand the importance of enriching their child’s lives and different ways in which they can do this via:
- Our Homework projects provide children with opportunities to extend their learning further in exciting and engaging ways. For more information around our homework, please click here.
- Each year group has a Rainbow Passport that families are encouraged to complete across the year. In addition, we also have Rainbow Passport afternoons that enables children to tick off some of the activities on their passport. To find further information around our Rainbow Passports, please click here.
- We run a Nurture Group for parents to provide them with further support around how they can develop their child’s character and resilience through activities at home.
- We run Parent Workshops and send home top tips, one of which talks about how to engage children in play at home more frequently.
Charties
Each class supports a charity that is special to them.
The children have decided which charity they would like to support and they will support that charity during their time at Garston CE.
You can see each class charity in the attachments below.
Mini Police
We are delighted to have been chosen as one of the schools in Liverpool to be offered the opportunity to take part in an exciting project led by Merseyside Police.
The Mini Police project within Merseyside Constabulary is set to be a fun and interactive volunteering opportunity for 9 to 11-year-old children. Our Mini Police will support the force priorities, through participation in community engagement events. Those involved can look forward to developing a confident voice through enjoyable experiences. Children who become part of the programme will help to tackle local issues, as highlighted by their own communities. By assisting the police service, we hope they will also carry that ownership and pride back into the community they live in.
This programme has been very successful in Durham where the Mini Police have, for example, had the opportunity to take part in numerous speed watch operations – working alongside neighbourhood police teams to check vehicle speeds in problem areas, often close to schools; as well as providing a ‘guard of honour’ for Princess Anne at the official opening of new police headquarters building. Our children can look forward to similar opportunities.
